Chapter 19

You’d think living with two hot guys would be any girl’s dream, but my bright idea was quickly turning into a nightmare. It had only been a few days, and I was ready to run away screaming straight into the pointy end of the nearest vampire slayer’s stake.

Nico’s normally fun, carefree personality had been replaced by a sullen, jealous and cranky one. And Damian was driving me nuts. He was like the shadow that never left my side twenty-four hours a day—which was probably the driving force behind Nico’s constant bad mood. Something had to give or else I was going back to Marie’s, and I didn’t care who was coming after me.

Don’t even think about it, Damian’s stern voice broadcast through my mind.

“Seriously? I can’t even think alone?” I yelled at him from across the kitchen table between bites of cereal.

Nico looked up from the newspaper, his brow arched. “What?”

“Nothing. I was just thinking out loud.” I pushed my chair back, the legs loudly scraping against the wood floor, and deposited my bowl in the sink.

“Oh by the way, Aria,” said Nico way too politely. “I spoke to Stellan this morning, and he’s still coming up empty on your aunts. He’s not sure if it’s your blood or if they’ve simply managed to hide themselves extremely well, but he can’t get a positive location on them.”

“Great.” Stupid Damian-tainted blood.

“He’s not giving up though. He wanted me to be sure to tell you that.”

“Thanks.” I didn’t want to think about the possibility that my aunts, just like my mom and all the Negrusurori, were dead. The longer it took Stellan to find them, the more likely it seemed.

“You about ready for class?” asked Damian.

I hovered at the kitchen entry, emptiness seeping into my bones. “Yeah, I gotta get my stuff. I’ll meet you outside.” Yes that’s right, Damian came to all of my classes. We had already argued about it a few times, but I had lost—even Nico took his side. It had been days, and no one had tried to kill me or anything. Maybe no one really cared that I was a vampire-witch hybrid after all.

I grabbed my backpack from my room-slash-Nico’s-guestroom and headed out. The door to Nico’s bedroom was ajar so I stopped and poked my head through the doorway. He was shoving an old book into his laptop case. He looked up and jumped when he saw me.

“Geez, Aria, you scared me. I thought you guys had left already.” He zipped up the case and threw it over his shoulder.

“I needed my backpack.” I narrowed my eyes at his laptop case. “What’s in the bag?”

“Huh?”

“The book you just put in there, what is it?”

“Oh, just an old spell book.” He walked toward the door so I followed.

“Where are you going with it?”

He stopped in the corridor and exhaled slowly, shoving his hands in his pockets. “I don’t want to lie to you. I’m going to see Dorothee for my magic lesson.”

I placed my hands on my hips, my blood boiling.
